5-SURE began as a student volunteer organization dedicated to improving safety on Stanford campus. It emerged from the 1970's women's movement as a rape elimination service for students. In the early days, students could request a pleasant, safe alternative to walking alone at night by calling 5-SURE (5-7873) from a campus phone. Operating after sunset, the service employed volunteer escorts to accompany Stanford students from one campus location to the next. Unfortunately, during the 80's the service stagnated and stopped running...
